Inquiry about Social Media Strategy. David Fischer writes ...
One of my graduate students is currently working on a project for the Dutch Foreign Ministry, a survey of professional views on the importance of social networking in public diplomacy. Could the survey be posted with a request that anyone with a view should contact her directly? It would be a great help to her.

- How important is public diplomacy in relation to traditional diplomacy?

  • How has it changed since the Cold War? Since 9/11?
  • Obama's Presidential campaign?
  • How is it affected by the 'democratization' of the audience?
  • How has it evolved in the Information Age/Global village?

- How can social media be used to support foreign policy goals?
- What style of interaction is best for a government agency in the social media realm?
- What is the code of conduct in the social media realm for government agencies?
- What are the potential linkages between a government agency’s website and other social media providers such as Facebook/Twitter/YouTube/blogs/microsites?
- What is your view on tailoring/formatting content to suit specific media channels?
- Is it better to develop a presence on social media under a broad umbrella (ie., "The Netherlands in the Western US") on to focus on specific themes of interest (ie., "water management" or "creative industries")?
- Who is your target audience in the United States?
- What kind of content should we communicate to American citizens?
- To what degree should we leverage excellence in one field in the promotion of other public diplomacy topics?
- What is your vision on collaboration between EU countries in terms of public diplomacy?
- There are critics saying that the internet exists to circumvent the government, and according to this opinion, the government should not have a voice in social media. What is your view?
