Telhami released the findings at a 2 December news conference at the National Press Building in Washington. He noted that Al-Hurra could only build viewership
and have an impact if it understands what its audience wants. Al-Jazeera's success, Telhami said, is probably because it cares about Islamic thought and
culture and shapes its programmng accordingly. He felt there is definite room for a U.S. station -- even in the highly competitive satellite TV market.
Telhami added that the problem is not the fact that Al-Hurra is a U.S. government funded station. He noted that Qatar, which finances Al Jazeera, was very unpopular in the Arab world in the mid to late 1990s when its viewership took off and began to soar. The question is whether Al-Hurra can tailor its
programming to its audience while having a significant impact on very hostile anti-American opinion in the Arab world. "Right now," Telhami concluded, "it's not able to do it... to get it right."
